encore vivant

Jump to Comments Hey, look, there will be nother post for February naught-five! Let the excitement commence! (Not really.) Yeah, I’m still here, still alive or something.

Yeah, I’ve never liked this month past the first week or so. The weather’s always the worst of the year, and it seems to count doubly down in Arkansia. It’s sunny outside today, but I’m sure that means that it’s only like 40 degrees and windy. Becuase, you know, we can’t actually have good weather.

We started doing the subjunctive in French am Freitag. I wasn’t impressed– the Spanish subjunctive system is much more far-reaching. Neither one has future subjunctive, though– I’ve always wanted to see how such a thing would work. I know Latin had it, but Latin has just about every conceivable permeutation of syntax possible in a nominative-accusative language.

Oh, and the other thing that I don’t like about French subjunctive: the sole case in English where there’s a nonmodal marked subjunctive — 1ps & 3ps present be in an if clause (e.g., “If I were rich, then …”) — isn’t subjunctive in French! Come on! Well, at least there’re less endings to remember for pres. subj. than in Spanish.

  • Is that even subjunctive in English? I always thought it was conditional…

  • The subjunctive in French is only useful for poetry reading. At least, that’s the only time we really saw it in French 1-4. Passe simple is the REAL “guy who is put on the back burner but matters”. Good luck reading French novels without a firm grip on that tense.

Glad you’re enjoying French. Good to see a weblog update.

Turf, I watched you die in the Van Cleef campaign. Twice. “You need to stand back”, even if you are a jumping night elf. 😉

  • Christopher:

    It’s

{SUBORD} IF [pres., past. subj.], {ORD} [cond. indic.].

It’s how it is in Spanish, too, although I think the condiditional in the main clause goes to imperfect instead of some sort of complex past conditional combo like in English.

  • I was like level 14. I did run away, and I did stay back. So much so that I died for it. Dying twice in VanCleef isn’t too bad anyway. Matt died once, too, and he was level 49! We were just rushing a little bit. Also, how did you know I died? Do you have a character in Zul’Jin? If so… what is the name?

  • I’m a regular Yuri Gellar. (Or irregular as the case may be. MAYBE SUBJUNCTIVE?)

To answer you straight, no, I don’t play.
