So, how about those pants?

Jump to Comments I’ve developed a new bad downloading habit: John Mayer concerts. However, unlike hip hop mp3s or divxed music videos captured off of MTV2, this stuff is actually on the white side of the gray area. Oh yeah, I’m not a pirate, I’m a privateer! Avast.

Anthony Burke, my good friend from when I was really little I lived in Texas a decade ago (and whose family later moved up here a few years after we did) got married yesterday evening. Congratulatories and everything. I think I still have one of his college CS books; I ought to give that back to him. XD XD XD

The way I see it, if you’re not getting recording-room quality, you shouldn’t be expected to pay for recording room quality. Further, if somebody brought in a camcorder to the concert, your downloading of that material is little different from them making copies of the tapes for friends and family. The lost profit for a concert would only occur if the concert video leaked out before the concert, which it can’t, since the video is of the frikkin concert. People pay for the concert experience, not just for the songs played.

In short, I agree — this is definitely the whiter side of the gray zone.

  • Actually, Nazzy, the sound quality on some of these is equivalent to published recordings of Mayer live. I also agree with your logic; though the real kicker to this whole thing is on his website, under the upcoming tour dates schedule thing:

    Live Recording
John Mayer allows audiotaping at almost every live performance. No soundboard or power feeds are provided.
Taping is limited to audio-only, using only microphones. Wireless receivers are strictly prohibited. We sincerely appreciate all of John’s fans, so we ask that you please be considerate of those around you by not obstructing anyone else’s view of the performance.
All recordings must be used for personal use or trading only. Selling or commercializing any recording is illegal and will jeopardize taping provileges for everyone.

Aw yeah. That’s what I’m talking about.

See, Mayer is apparently what you might call a “true concert musician.” He realizes that once the people have come and paid money to see him, there’s no difference between them taping him live and putting it on the Internet for free and, say, just sitting back and sleeping. Once he has the money, it’s all good. But *SELLING* the concert online would be illegal, as then people are making money off of attendance, which is prohibited by his rules of the house. His performance, his talent, his profits. Not j00rs, he says. And he’s right. Looks like your friend is quite the man, Bennyfactor.
