I want a record player for Christmas

Jump to Comments Seriously. One that can do 33s, 45s, and 78s, stereo, and has an automatic changer deal (you know, you stack a bunch of LPs on and it wil drop one down onto the turntable when the previous record is complete). It’d be so cool. And by cool, I mean totally sweet.

  • By want, do you mean “You will be asking for one for Christmas 2004”? Or do you mean “I wish I had one of these, the way I wish we had flying DeLoreans with nuclear engines and jigawatt power needs”? Because … I know I’d like a DeLorean that could go back in time and fly in the sky.

  • No, I actually want a record for Christmas. Unattainable dream wishes (such as flying, time-traveling deLoreans or reparations for slavery) are normally reserved for Kwanzaa.

  • You’re reading IAATB-FOX! Give us one hour, we’ll give you a line bound to incite riots in L.A., Detroit, and YOUR MOM’s backyard!

But yeah … you really want one, then. Well … I guess expense is generally a non-issue ;O, but it’s still a general question to ask, so … how expensive are these things? And do you want an antique, or do you want a replica (like what might be shown on The Price is Right)?

  • Well, there’s vintage ones with the described features on eBay for 60 bucks and up. I don’t know if the record players that are still made have multidisc features. I do know, however, that most all of them have what used to be considered as inferior technology– a belt-driven turntable instead of a direct-drive one (that is, the drive motor is directly connected to the turntable spindle). This is, of course, because one can’t do those DJ scracth moves for very long on a direct-drive without breaking the motor!

  • It’s actually gigawatt, not jigawatt, they mispronounced it ๐Ÿ™‚

  • you can totally get ’em at garage sales for $5 and up…..though if you want a cool one that’ll drop ’em for you, you’ll probably have to look at some vintage/antique shop.

  • i saw one at the indy goodwill store this weekend for like $15

  • NO REALLY!?!?!?!?!?!? ThANKS, MAtt! ๐Ÿ˜€
