I flipping hate Arkansas.

Jump to Comments So I hear people in Flatlandia got a whole bunch of snow! Yeah, everything’s old wet and muddy and flooded down here. Dr Cochran gave a talk in chapel this morning with regard to Christ and the laying down of his life, and how this can be seen not only in the singular, literal self-sacrifice of the Cross, but in his daily behavior towards his fellow man. His point was that it is in that manner that we should strive to be Christlike, I think — I kind of lost track when he decided to show a clip from the movie Glory to illustrate. Normally I find the use of pop cultural artifacts distasteful within confines of a homily. However, Glory is one of my favorite movies, because of the confluence of great cinematography, score, subject, and message (yeah, +7 LRMS XD). The clip shown was of the run-up to the attack on Ft. Wagner, Charleston. So during this clip, obviously, there are some shots of the fort defenses, and I could have sworn that some guy behind me, when members of the Confederate army were on screen said something to the effect of “there’s our guys.” Steven sits near me in chapel, and independently confirmed this in a conversation with suitemate Robin. Yeah, that’s right, almost 150 years later, this a—hat identifies himself with the militia of an illegal, racist, treacherous pseudo-state dedicated to the wholesale oppression and enslavement of an entire class of humanity. And, then, just to top everything else off, I got mud all over my fresh pair of nice J.Crew pants when walking out of chapel because these idiots fail to understand that when water falls out of the sky it needs to be channeled somewhere besides the sidewalk. I can’t stand this crap anymore. I think I’m gonna go home this weekend.

  • Too bad Colleen’s coming in this weekend or I’d meet you back in the ‘ville.

Also, did you not know that The South Shall Rise Again? I saw it on a bumper sticker once.

  • It may not be a valid excuse, but I do believe that most Southerners never have a choice: they are fated to become proud descendants of Dixie from the day they are born because of the sociohistorical quagmire the South finds itself trapped in. While the results and the social stigmas are quite different, the cause for this “entrapment” reminds me in many ways of “ghetto culture” amongst a large subpopulation of African Americans.

  • Interesting thoughts!
