Jaguar vs Ze Chermans

Jump to Comments I’ve linked to a clip about the new Jaguar XF from the show Top Gear. This new Jaguar is cool and all, I like it; however, the main reason why I’ve linked it is because of some of the hilarious things James May and Jeremy Clarkson say in it. I’ve transcribed the better bits below the break in case you can’t penetrate their accents, Mr Jonathan Foreigner! You see, Mr Jonathan Foreigner has this ridiculously outdated view of what Britain is. He thinks we all live in Anne Hathaway’s cottage and the go out to Ye Olde Tea Roomes where we eat some Kendal Mint Cake – and then maybe we’ll go out and find a red phone box, and ring up some beefeaters at the Tower of London to see if we can have our bowler hats back.

Every model in the range comes with leather, the excellend paddle-shift automatic gearbox, touch screen sat-nav, electric seats, decent alloys, and … “blue teeth.”

For years the sleek and modern Germans have been having it easy, because all we had to take them on was Chumley Warner.

If you’re modern and contemporary, why do you spit out the word “Germans” every time you say it in any film like it’s 1941 and the sky is full of Heinkels?

  • Entertaining video, and I’m not all that into cars. I liked the opening, the end, and the first time we entered the XF best.

I think the design’s sort of silly (and would quickly become annoying!) if you’ve got to hit that button to start the car and twist that knob to change gears. “Futuristic?” Insofar as you feel like you’re onboard a StarFleet vessel, yes. Insofar as you feel like you’ve stepped into Star Trek TOS? Not on your life! Felt very gimmicky and “The World of Tomorrow!” to me. Probably because of the TOS vibe and the fact that I’m subconsciously aware that TOS, while allegedly depicting the technology of the 23rd century, is ultimately a campy television show that’s already 40 years old.

One last thing: for a guy who nagged about the grill on the Model S, why was he suddenly so happy with the one on the XF? It was the same styled mesh (with the space spacing between threads), and now it covers even more of the front of the car. Yeah, the Model S’s had that “big enough to be an eyesore, small enough to be completely worthless” feel to it, but I don’t think most of us would freak out over it — and so given that Mr. May did, I’m surprised he went from 180° to 0° rather than, oh I dunno, 85°.
