DOUBLE LOOPBACK PROTECTIAN

Jump to Comments So, I bet you, like me, are getting pissed off by those audio ads in AIM. WELL WELL WELL FAGORTS, HEAR SI SOEM HELPFUL COMPUTAR HELP AND HELPING TIPS FOR YUO!!!

Fun things like DeadAIM might get rid of the ad images, but they do nothing to stop the new audio trash. So, instead of trying to hack the AIM client from displaying (and playing) these new ads, why not just prevent it from being able to download them in the first place? Thi sounds like a job for editing the hosts file! (Note: the below information is provided as-is without any sort of warranty, guarantee, or further support, either expressed or impled.)

‘hots’ file location for:
Windows 95/98/Me: c:\windows\
Windows NT/2000/XP Pro: c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\
Windows XP Home: c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\

Open the ‘hosts’ file in notepad. You can add the entries at the end of the file.
Usually the last entry is:
127.0.0.1 localhost

The bottom of the new file should be changed to:
(old last entry, usually 127.0.0.1 localhost)
127.0.0.1 ads.web.aol.com
127.0.0.1 ar.atwola.com

Ins hort, this tells programs that the internet addresses ‘ads.web.aol.com’ and ‘ar.atwola.com’ should point to 127.0.0.1, which is better known as ‘localhost’ (techspeak for your own machine), which is often used as a kind of ‘null value’ for IP addresses.
