Actually, the subjunctive isn’t strictly necessary, as there is no doubt or hypothetical about this situation — this “disheveled professor” was in fact once a baby, and he did in fact dress like this, to wit:

Even twenty-five years ago I was wearing seersucker and bow ties. My hair sure wasn’t wavy back then, though.
